Proxy adalah suatu komputer server (bisa jg berupa program aplikasi) yg menerima request dr komputer client utk kemudian diteruskan ke server selanjutnya (bisa ke internet atau satu jaringan ethernet). Karena fungsinya yg berupa penengah antara client – server, maka seringkali proxy ini diatur utk mem-filter request2 yg sekiranya sesuai dgn kebijakan security dr jaringan kantor/ kampus yg bersangkutan.

Aturan yg di-setting utk proxy ini, biasanya :
1. mem-filter request2 web page yg kontennya mengandung script2 berbahaya.
*misal : web page tertentu yg mengandung trojan/ virus biasanya akan diblok permanen.
2. mengatur port2 mana saja yg boleh diakses oleh client dan terbuka utk request umum.
*misal : layanan instant messenger YM (Yahoo Messenger) atau ICQ membutuhkan port tertentu dlm koneksinya, meski secara default lewat port 80.
3. mem-filter keyword tertentu yg mengandung konten pornografi, fraud, dan keyword lain yg disesuaikan dgn kebijakan administrator.
misal : keyword “porn”, “sex”, “adult” biasanya di-blok di level proxy sehingga request client tdk akan diteruskan ke server selanjutnya.

dan lain sebagainya msh bnyk fungsi proxy.
